Why Canada avoided the subprime meltdown by Illiad2009-01-29 12:10:37
I've always thought it stupid... by esbita 2009-01-29 13:01:11
to make mortgage interest tax-deductible. Canada's wiser in that regard. But philosophically I am opposed to any kind of taxation meant to promote/encourage one way of living or consumption over another.

Whether I'm single or married, whether I own or rent, tax me the same!

Americans are optimistic on debt/consumption, but over the last 15 years or so we've been in denial, too. Our industrial base has crumbled, wages have held stagnant or declined. We've swept that reality under the rug using credit all this time, rather than admit the new realities and consume less. This denial is exactly what The Powers That Be wanted.
