The Bacon Number is derived from a preexisting form called The Erdos Number, but the concept is simmilar--Paul Erdos was one of science's most proliferic writers, having cranked out 100+ papers in his lifetime. The number aspect refers to who refernced whom--anyone who referenced an Erdos paper were a 1, and so on.
The Bacon Number is similar, only it's based on movies, and only movies. The Six Degrees of Seperation is a whole other phenomenon.
