The people who argue harshly that inheritance should not be taxed in Norway are usually people in their 40s who have large windfalls from retired, debt-free parents coming their way.

That explains a lot. I can't say I feel much sympathy for them.

Canada hasn't had an inheritance tax since the 1980s. Instead, inheritance is treated as a capital gain. For the most part beneficiaries here don't have to pay a cent out of the estate beyond what debts are outstanding.
