mind made up. I did NOT ignore the voting record, and only pay attention to what he says.
I discount very early statements and votes, as those can be charged with more idealism and ideology (an ironic combination) than the candidate holds now. I also discount the same kind of crap that both camps love to play where they say "(X) votes AGAINST (good thing) 19 times" when in fact it was merely an add-on to a bigger bill, and they very well may have voted FOR it an additional 2 times, one of which was the decisive vote.
I made up my mind from the information I found, the information you found, and the information DR66 found.
Just because I didn't show my work doesn't mean it isn't there. So stop railing at me for the very things I'm trying to promote in other people. I'm not a party or ideology zombie. I don't care if somebody claims to be liberal or conservative. I care about what they have done, what they pledge to do, and whether I think I can trust those pledges.
And if you notice, I've been raising cain with DR66 (and others, in different threads) for the very same thing: find PROOF, not opinions. Don't send me to a site where some conservative/liberal/whatever blogger is ranting about the candidate doing and saying this and here's what it REALLY means.
I was addressing what DR66 was saying specifically, which was (paraphrased) "See? The Democratic platform says they will take away our guns!" and refuting that. I was also responding to the implied "you must be a gun-hating liberal" tone that I sensed (correctly or not) emerging.
I still haven't found any huge, bleeding, ulcerated "I want your guns" vote or series of votes from Obama. Even in his Illinois Legislature days. Statements? A few, some of which reflect and early naivete, or perhaps bad advice from a very anti-gun set of advisers he had back then. But I give those less weight than the votes. The votes tell me that he would likely reinstitute the "assault weapons" ban if he could, and I've already said that I DISAGREE with that.
Are you holding me to a higher standard because I *HATE* party (and partisan) politics? Are you missing the point of my posts? Are you very pro-gun and Republican as well and trying to defend DR66 and McCain? Am I really doing such a bad job of indicating (by the whole body of my posts) that I really really don't care whether I'm a liberal or a conservative, and I don't care which party wins, as long as they don't f4 up the country and honestly try to fix what's wrong with it WITHOUT making themselves and their buddies richer in the process?
I don't get it. Don't consider this a slam...I just don't get it. |
