I would kindly thank you to not put words in by merlin 2008-10-21 13:59:32
my mouth. No where in my post did I stake a claim to wanting to see old people starve to death. I do believe that's usually referred to as a straw man.

First, yes what is proposed by Obama could actually result in someone taking home more than their base wages at the end of the day, thanks to the concept of refundable tax credits. Esbita has covered that much better than I.

The main thrust of my point is that low wage earners are ALREADY being subsidized in Social Security. The accrue benefits at a faster rate than they contribute, whereas "rich" people accrue at a slower rate than they contribute. So, "rich" people are already subsidizing Social Security, but, as esbita pointed out, it's done with the bucket of money that is intended for Social Security.

Obama now wants to tap general revenues as well, and to do that he needs to increase the top marginal tax rates. Why? So he can expand the welfare state, which I believe is a bad idea.

Welfare, from its inception, was intended as a stop-gap measure to get people back on their feet, not as a lifestyle.
