Is it fair to let people starve to death by Peace_man 2008-10-21 13:44:40
when they get too old to work? That is the real question.

And it is the question that is answered 'no' by Social Security.

The theory that social security is paid for by contributions from everyone during their working days is very comforting, and allows everyone to buy into the plan that taxes more money from them. But this is theory only. The reality is that not everyone makes enough during their working days to support themselves - to have a roof over their heads and be able to buy food, let alone clothing.

What is proposed here is not something that will pay anybody more than their wages, while they are working. It is something that will ensure that nobody starves to death once they are no longer able to work. No matter how much they earned when they worked.

If you prefer to see old people on the street begging for money when they can no longer work, that is certainly within your rights. I don't share that sentiment.
