Is it an "income tax cut" or a "payroll tax cut"? | by merlin | 2008-10-21 09:38:24 |

It makes a fair bit of sense. | by Peace_man | 2008-10-21 10:42:40 |

Except it's *not* actually payroll tax relief. | by esbita | 2008-10-21 11:48:18 |
| Hmm - that's an interesting setup. |

| And I can see how in theory what Obama wants to do looks bad. But if you consider how Congress is willing to spend $700 billion to bail out banks, how likely do you think it is that they'd be willing to bail out the Social Security Fund? I'd say even more likely. And this is effectively how such programs work in most other countries. The income is put into general revenue, and the payments, although made from the Social Security Fund, are simply replenished from general revenue.
So how much is paid into that fund now is really not that critical - and the payroll deduction simply acts like an additional tax without any low income deduction. This is what it seems to me Obama is trying to eliminate. As for funding Social Security adequately - as I said, I consider money for social security programs much better spent than military programs or wars. It's not so much a question of whether this will happen - it's a matter of when.
Considering the recent bailout again, it proved that even Republicans are in agreement with the principles of social welfare. They seem to want to benefit a different social class from what Obama wants to benefit though. So even in principle there doesn't seem to be any disagreement about whether this is a good thing or not. |
