The problem with that is cities are a much smaller and narrower economy. Some place like Detroit that is based upon the auto industry is going to have a hard time whoever gets into office if the *national* trend for the auto industry is down.

A national economy is highly diversified. Some areas (cities) may have trouble, or even extended troubles, while others keep chugging along. The areas that have trouble or not also tend to vary across changing economic situations.

The fix to that is that the mayors/city councils should be working to diversify their own cities. That will help protect them against national trends over which they have no power. Maybe Beck is pointing out that Democrats don't do very well at that task.

It's still a very different task than running the nation; I don't think they can be easily compared.
