It's not quite clear, what you mean. ;-)

If you have "columnB='bar' and columnA='foo'" in the where clause, (or A/B swapped) then yes, one index on columnA and columnB would help.

Whether you should put columnA or columnB first in the index doesn't really depend on the order in the query, but more on how the data is distributed in the table. E.g. how many similar values are in columnA as opposed to columnB.

Can the DB you use display an execution plan?
