It could, just about, run XP (same model has been documented to do so), but it's a lot happier with the 98 it came with. Linux is no issue on it. It has a strange setup wherein it has two parts: the computer itself (thinky bit, keys, hard drive, battery and so on) and the addon (optical drive (DVD drives were available(but not for watching movies), but CDs are more common, no burner option), floppy/second battery (one or the other, but under Windows you can warm-swap; deactivate the add-on, remove it, switch out and reconnect; this is probably also possible under Linux)). It won't run current Firefox worth beans, but it's cool with Opera. Word processing is no big deal either. Mine is severely out of spec (I replaced the hard drive with the smallest I could get: 40GB, and got a 256MB SODIMM into the slot (note: spec sheet says maximum memory is 192MB, and not all 256MB SODIMMS of the right type work in it)) but frankly, it's indestructible. I have *never* needed to replace anything. All the replacements have been of the "Ooooh, shiny and better!" persuasion.
Mine is over nine years old, though. |
