twice with the motherboard on my old laptop and several times with power cords, however in all instances Apple admitted it their fault, and repaired/replaced appropriate parts free of charge (was annoying waiting for them though), despite being out of warrantee.
You can run proper Linux distros on Apple's laptops, even more since the switch to Intel. I believe the only difference is the bootloader, although I don't run Linux on mine (and haven't for years), so can't speak on the state of the drivers.
