Reliable laptop by oot2008-10-21 07:31:21
So far had good experience with by davydd 2008-10-21 08:36:51
a 2002 Toshiba Satellite Pro (which lasted until last year and was discarded for beng woefully underpowered for the engineering software I use nowadays). It survided lots of travelling and quite a bit of tough use (mostly heat and dirt while I used it on construction sites all over Asia).
Most of my colleagues had those as well and I know of very few problems. That doesn't mena of course that current models are as good.

My current PC is a Sony Vaio from their business line and seems to be doing alright so far, though I had one colleague who suffered several problems with the motherboard and hard disk within the warranty period.

Now a lot of people use Dell and Fujitsu Siemens models (they were apparently cheaper than Toshiba) among my colleagues, with mixed results.

My wife has an Acer Travelmate for 3 years as a desktop replacement which has a couple of minor issues (mostly related to poor build quality) and will be replacing it soon, probably by a Sony.

One last piece of advice: Get a good bag with decent padding (not the free crap that you often get for free along with the laptop) that is easy to lug around and make sure that your laptop is always wrapped up nicely - it helps a lot in keeping it from getting banged up too badly.
