brand that has offices in that country AND will do work on the laptop in that country if it does fail. This will probably mean a big company and some phone calls for research before purchase.

If travelling overseas I would reccomend Lenovo, Toshiba, Sony, Panasonic, and (as much as I hate to admit it) Dell. the Dell laptops are not bad depending on the model. If it is going t Run *nix those brands have pretty good support for *nix.

We have a Dell laptop here that we use that has been through heck and back and the only thing I have done to it is re-install the OS on it a couple of times. It used to fly on planes all over North America with the President or CEO and even me a couple of times to do trainings.
