Surf the web, word processing, watch DVDs. Doesn't need to be the newest coolest thing out there -- it'll be running Linux, with Fluxbox as a window manager, which isn't a very demanding setup.

Durability isn't so much the issue as reliability. For the most part, the laptop is going to sit at home like a desktop computer would (except that I'll be moving a lot). Mostly I just need it to not suffer any spontaneous hardware failures while doing so...
