Reliable laptop by oot 2008-10-21 07:31:21
I have always preferred desktop computers to laptops. Mostly because I can build it myself (and start with good parts!) and if something fails, I can replace it myself and have the computer back up and running the same afternoon. The idea of having a laptop, where problems take longer and are more expensive, hasn't really appealed to me...

But, now that I'm going to be moving a lot, I'm looking to buy a laptop to be my primary computer for the next 3-4 years. During this time, if something goes wrong, dealing with it would be majorly inconvenient, both financially and going-without-a-computer-ly. So I want a Very Reliable laptop. (Or if there is no such thing, then a laptop where parts are cheap and I can replace them myself instead of sending it away for a month because the motherboard failed.)

What brands are good for this, and what ones should I stay away from?

I know from seeing the laptops at work that Dell and Lenovo are two brands to avoid...
