The Neo's software is freer, G1 isn't OSS yet. Plus since it'll come out under Apache2 instead of GPL3, handset makers might try to tivoize it. OpenMoko will have a smaller list of packages with all the devs working on iPhone and Android. I've also read that Android's ability to run any code will make it more vulnerable to malware, but take that with a few grains of salt since it was on a pro-Apple site. Bottom line: the Neo is made for the die-hard Free software user. If having the source code to your phone isn't something you need, you'd probably happier with a G1.
