ATTN: DesertRat66 (US Political Thread) by firehawk 2008-10-21 01:20:01
Just to follow up on yesterday's stuff RE: gun control,

* If I have to know who they are to believe them, then that means there's no evidence being presented. Without evidence, I'm not going to blindly accept what they say, nor (in my opinion) should you. The only one whose words I would blindly accept without proof hasn't been seen for nigh on 2000 years.

* Okay, so he's against weapons greater than .50 caliber. That obviously takes out a lot of really cool firearms, and I disagree with that stance. But I doubt he's going to push it, and even if he did, I doubt he'd get it thru Congress. But, again, I vehemently disagree on banning weapons because of arbitrary specifications. Is there much call for a weapon larger than .50 cal in most applications? No. Do we have the right to have one? Hell, yes.

But I will NOT let my possible future inability to buy small cannons and weapons more powerful than a Barrett Light .50 and Desert Eagle (o.O!) keep me from voting for a man who I think will handle the other 99% of the country's business correctly.

Do I think McCain would handle our business correctly? Perhaps, but:
* I agree with him less often than I do Obama
* I trust him less than Obama
* I've lost a lot of respect for his "Maverick" image since he started lock-stepping with the GOP party heavyweights, circa 2001
* Unlike all the talking heads on radio, I'm not buying any of the smear garbage that's been sent against Obama by the McCain campaign, namely the name plays, the Ayers "connection", his past schooling, etc.

So you see, I'm not going to play the "he said, she said" game. I've checked out Obama's platform. I've checked out the Democratic platform. It's a bit more "gun controlly" that I would like, specifically reinstating the "assault weapons" ban and the whole "big caliber" thing, but the "grand plan" to take all our guns away (ZOMG!) is pure fabricated crap.

And even if he wanted to, I doubt he'd get away with it with the current Supreme Court. They knocked down the DC gun ban, and I'm sure they'd knock down the "assault weapons" ban if it were re-enacted, and would certainly annihilate anything else stronger than that.
