A serious comment on "animal rights" by run.dll 2008-10-20 16:21:54
prompted by the manner in which the "Bear Attack" thread below developed.

Perhaps this would be a good topic for the philosophy thread: Do animals have rights?

I was taught as a boy that "rights" are just one side of a coin, the other side of which is labelled "responsibilities". If you accept this (and frankly, I think it can be fairly said that the flip side is now considered optional by many), then in what way can an animal live up to its "responsibilities" (and indeed, what would these responsibilities be?)

As for myself, I don't think animals have rights - I think _we_ have responsibilities. _We_ have an obligation to treat animals in an ethical manner, which is not at all the same as saying that animals have rights, although the fuzzy logic of the cute-and-cuddly school of human-animal interactions evidently doesn't see the distinction.
