| I.B.M. = Incredibly Boring Manuals |

Darn near useless, too.
I once worked with our 'computer operator' in a former job (it was not my classification, but I 'knew computer stuff'). We had a system 36. We had a Twinaxial network strung through the town linking several buildings together (why not? It was the town that I worked for, and we own the utility poles). They were bringing in these new IBM PS/2 model 30 PCs. Talk about state of the art! They even had a couple of ProPrinters to attach to select PCS!
I was helping to get these things to talk to the 36. Using PCS and Rumba. The 4" thick IBM manual was useless. We finally called our support line, and took handwritten notes that filled one side of a legal size page. That set of notes contained *everything* we needed to install and configure the PCS/Rumba installation. The 4" manual was allegedly the instructions on setting up these two packages on a PS/2, yet it contained none of the information we got from the tech support call. Thanks, IBM! |
