There was a time when compeating railroads didn't always use the same guage for their tracks. There are people that will tell you one of the problems the South had in the US Civil War was that it's network of railroads was a hodge-podge and regionally dependant. They could never get it into the efficient way to ship troops and supplies that they needed. The mix didn't completely prevent it from working, but it certainly caused lots of problems. In that case uniformity would have helped their cause.
