so mkv can't contain avi mkv however can contain Mpeg-4/DivX/Xvid though, which are the most common things stored in an avi container. as to the "nightmare to transform", how's that? i've seen at least one program (I think over on videohelp) that does this. It basically just demuxes the mkv (splits it into it's component parts) then remuxes it as a mp4, no recompression necessary.
