congressional hearing a while back where parents were presenting their case about schools effectively being dope dealers for kids. One mother was telling a story about a school psychologist who analyzed her kid, without her consent even, and recommended the child be put on ritalin.

She got a second opinion from an independent psychiatrist who said that the kid was just fine. He was just being a kid, and there was no call for medication.

When the school noticed that the mother had not followed the recommendations of the school psychologist, they called child welfare services who then showed up at the mother's door to take her child away from her right then, right there on charges of child abuse.

If she had not had the written diagnosis from the independent psychiatrist immediately available, she would have lost her child, right then, right there.

She did nothing wrong. She was an effective parent. More effective than the school or the state as she cared enough about her child to second-guess the state's opinion. Yet, the state's childcare system kicked in, and had it not been for her written documentation, it would have followed through.
