Actually it's just a container format, that can hold anything. (like avi)
Most I have seen hold an MP4 AVC_HD video file with AC3 sound and I believe sometimes even subtitle tracks.
They are however a nightmare to transform into something the PS3 can use....which I have been trying for the last few days.
Don't know what the result in quality would be, but on linux you should be able to transcode it using mkvextract tools or ffmpeg.
