basically they have computers that are dedicated to receiving data from the sensors and throwing 99.99% of it away based on some criteria that the scientists figured out. The remaining 0.01%, they forward on to the next set of computers which do more in-depth analysis and then throw away 99.99% of the events that they get... and maybe through yet another step before the data hits disk/tape where it awaits the real heavy-duty analysis. Fun.
