The dongle could be kept in the DVD case most games come in these days and wouldn't require authentication with a server so the worries about the server going away are gone. There are still a couple of problems though. There is the problem of losing the dongle which is no different than losing the CD/DVD but you could make a backup of the CD/DVD. And there is the problem of the dongle becoming defective which is no different than the CD getting damaged but again you could make a backup CD/DVD. I think I still prefer this idea to what is currently being done.
