By making it a states-rights issue, the fundies have *50* fights on their hands. And many they will lose significantly.

Instead of one winner-takes-all battle, those who support gay rights only need win a majority of those 50 fights, and the other states will start to come their way. Trending would suggest that more states are likely to vote FOR gay rights than against them, over the next decade or so.
