Up here, several major mining projects have received environmental approval for development. That was based on the design of tailings systems.

The legal change is allowing these mines to eliminate the tailings storage plans and use lakes WITHOUT RE-EVALUATION of the environmental risks, and without knowledge of the underlying geology. Instead of an engineered solution that can be evaluated, we are to trust conditions in living lakes to successfully contain toxic materials, on the say-so of corporations.

No big deal right? We can trust gold mines with cyanide-laced tailings. We can trust uranium mining to use lakes for storage of tailings. No problem.

The penultimate question is:
Who do you trust more, government or industry?
The ultimate question?
What happens when government acts to serve corporations, not people?

See listeria
See Lehman Brothers, WaMu, AIG and all the other corporate welfare bums.
