Nobody has admitted if these bricks are solid or not. One wall of an office I had long ago was constructed of glass bricks - they had insides (filled with air) and outsides (which you could touch), and left very little in the way of debate where this inside/outside terminology was concerned.
It is quite possible to (theoretically) decide that the material making up the brick is the inside, while the border where the solid brick and the air meet could be considered the outside. Anybody who has built a 3D construct using CSG will tell you that a solid inside is still an inside, regardless. This is an approach that has resolved many a 3D model issue, let me assure you.
