I think you highly overestimate the public. How many times do people complain about MPAA or RIAA and that they'll never buy another X again? Look at how well Dark Knight did. Yep, that showed the movie studios. They learned their lesson.

Your car analogy fails because you can't trivially make an exact duplicate of your car at home. Also, you're only buying a license to the game. The CD you buy may be 100% yours to do with as you please, but that doesn't mean you get a 100% clear license to do with the content of the CD as you please.

A few really fantastic games under the new model and suddenly no one will remember a time before PC Game rentals.

And again, much of the DRM stuff can be removed/lowered and new stuff put in that doesn't completely halt, but maybe it just alters game play so that it's effectively not playable (once you pass the rental time period you've paid for). Sprinkle a bunch of these through out the code, and each time a new one gets triggered, suddenly all the crackers have to get to work again. Eventually they'll tire of working on some 'older' game.
