US Economy takes another slap to the groin by Illiad2008-09-15 08:36:13
So what will be the net affect be? by tesla_koil2008-09-15 08:48:39
The first thing that's going to happen by MatthewDBA 2008-09-15 09:06:32
is that a lot of people's 401(k) plans are going to slump massively. So are mutual funds.

Credit is going to tighten (even more than it has already) and I'd look to banks that hold mortgages to try and recoup their losses in other areas. This probably won't affect consumers immediately, but issuances of commercial paper and other short-term loans to businesses are going to be slashed (to an extent they already are). This in turn will make it more difficult for medium and large companies to do business, as they may have to turn to lines of credit for parts of their short to mid term operating expenses. Prices may go up slightly as these companies in turn try to hold on to their capital, but I wouldn't look for that too much. Mostly you'll see a continuation of the credit crunch, serious strictures on granting credit, and possibly rate hikes on certain types of credit.

I'm definitely looking to shift holdings more toward my international funds - they're affected by the US markets, of course; but they might bounce back more quickly.
