Early DRM was mostly along the type that required the CD in drive to play. This was annoying but a no-cd patch, 1:1 disk copy, or a mounted virtual copy of the disk would get around it and negated the issue.

After the Sony Rootkit fiasco, the limited number of activations, software phoning home for every run... it's moved from an annoyance (CD required) to a hassle (remove rootkit, phone to activate again, submits personal info).
