MySQLi, PHP Data Objects, and Pear's MDB2. I'd recommend one of the last two, since they're also database abstraction layers.

This is one thing (of many) that I dislike about PHP: There's no warning in the MySQL module docs that this is a poor and deprecated way of doing things, and there's no guidance as to which of the many options one should use. The docs for mysql_query don't mention that there are better ways of querying than string substitution (and remembering to escape _Everything_ correctly), too. And people wonder why PHP apps are typically so insecure.
