Copyright v. Piracy: "It's not theft." by Illiad2008-08-27 16:36:18
It does no harm. by hej2008-08-27 16:45:08
But why does it have to do harm before it's bad? by Illiad2008-08-27 17:00:05
Morality doesn't work for me. by tallastro 2008-08-27 20:23:30
My ethics are based on reduction of harm (see today's Philosophy corner). An authoritative source for proper behavior is not something that interests me. Each should make his/her own choices and live with the consequences.

Regarding piracy, if there is truly no harm, than I would find it acceptable. We freeload all the time. We're also out trying to get more for less. One example that comes to mind is dumpster diving. Do you view it as wrong to get something for nothing in that context? People that try to claim their trash after they've disposed of it, annoy me. They're denying resources to someone else for what reason? Spite? Because they didn't get something?

Don't think that I condone copying music or other works. Your second paragraph outlines the harm clearly. I also believe that some of the nonpaying deadbeats would pay if they couldn't get it for nothing.
