Bands playing in small venues (bars) where they charge a cover are a pretty good example of this. There are always people who get in without paying, and the bar frequently tries to shortchange the bands anyway, especially if there isn't sufficient drinking during the night. Bands who care about getting paid more than gas money typically have someone at the door counting heads and making sure only those on the guest list get in for free. For the others, there are bouncers.
