Telling one lie under extreme circumstances like Murderer at the Door might be right. Telling one lie under normal circumstances is often profitable.

But if you keep lying people will learn that your word is of no value, so they won't listen to you (which harms you more than lying helps you). And if lying is generally accepted then communication will end up impossible which destroys the society that has this norm.

Your question if lying is ever acceptable is much like asking if stealing or murdering is ever acceptable. Yes it is, under similar circumstances. But that doesn't mean that you may do it casually, or that it should not be punished.
