UF Philosophy Corner - Ethics by MatthewDBA2008-08-27 07:22:49
  Okay, here's a follow-up question. by MatthewDBA2008-08-27 08:48:25
Doesn't it come back to harm? by bitflipper2008-08-27 08:52:49
In that case by MatthewDBA2008-08-27 08:56:20
Perhaps it goes back to evaluation of harm. by fractaledge2008-08-27 09:13:27
There is that. There is also the fact by bitflipper 2008-08-27 09:20:32
that many--probably most--ethical systems try to establish absolutes of good and bad.

Now, as we know--both from our experiences and for our past discussions--absolutes are unattainable in this life. Ideals are wonderful things to postulate, but they cannot be realized, only approached asymptotically.

Thus, the ethical systems in question hold as an absolute standard that falsehood is bad. But life tells us that, sometimes, in some circumstances, falsehood may not be quite so bad as all that.
