(well, longer than the Bible; now, if we're talking about the Torah... :shrug:) As has the Tao Te Ching (longer even than the Torah, IIRC). I mean, if durability is our measuring stick, shouldn't these scriptures receive preffered treatment?
The Long Now project's stated reason for using Genesis was the number of languages into which it has been translated, though. I personally suspect a touch of bias--it likely is the scripture with which the project members were most familiar--but I can't really fault them for their choice. For the reasons they gave, it wasn't a bad choice.
Personally, though, I would have been very tempted to translate the text of the Rosetta Stone, itself, into all the various languages. But I guess I'm just a sentimentalist, in that regard... ;-) |
