one need not tell a lie. It's always possible to say simply "I'm sorry, that's privileged information and I'm not allowed to divulge it." That is in fact the truth - not the truth that was asked for, but truth nonetheless. Could it ever be ethical to tell an outright lie in order to protect client confidentiality?
