UF Philosophy Corner - Ethics by MatthewDBA2008-08-27 07:22:49
It strongly depends on one's sense of ethics. by EnzoMatrix2008-08-27 07:35:16

that mainly has to do with short term vs. by EnzoMatrix 2008-08-27 07:53:19
long term.

Say for example that I've cheated on my gf. I can lie and say no. Especially when the one I did it with also keeps her mouth shut, that can go right a long time.
Other factors will play though. Guilt, blackmailing and other leaks can send things southward prtty bad.
On the long term she might very well find out that not Only I cheated on her, but also tried to hide it.

Lies tend to get a life of their own. And unless you factor that in, it'll go bad eventually. Lying with the intention to tell the truth later (and thus end the lie) doesn't count here. (Take for example organising a surprise party. It's even for the good of the person lied too..)

And not only to improve one's own situation, but possibly others as well. I could decide not to tell my gf I've cheated on her, to protect Her feelings.

I'd like to make a side note here that the cheating example is purely hypothetical... ^^
