I was going to make the association to "dipstick" too.

But, if that is true, it's quite interesting that Bugs Bunny might have originated this usage.

I feel the need to point out that Wictionary claims the OED "cites a 1933 writing as the first usage of nimrod to refer to a fool, predating Bugs Bunny by at least five years and Steinbeck by nearly thirty."
