The linguistics of long distance space travel by thetree2008-08-26 14:42:25
Their language would change very little by Bellator2008-08-26 14:50:18
Most change will probably happen soon. by ripley8 2008-08-26 15:58:25
Like when the generations that started the shop die off and the
first ones that only ever lived in the space ship live on. Lots of
references in our language won't make a lot of sense to them anymore
and these parts of the language will be dropped or go into a state
of being ancient.
This effect may be delayed with a good library and education but my
guess is that our language will soon become the Shakespearian of
today. They'll have it in entertainment but won't use it themselves.

The advantage of modern media (audio/video) in this case is opposed
by the isolation, very different environment, etc.
(Like "what is this 'weather' the ancients on the videoscreen are
talking about?")
