language that we could understand period. Nor could we interbreed with them.

But why do you say that they have no ability to contact us? They would be travelling at sub light speed, so it would be possible to communicate via radio (or some other ether medium). Sure there'd be an annoying lag, but it should be possible to send letters often enough to maintain a common language.

Short of communication I don't think that would be possible though. If nothing else we would change too much to communicate with somebody who used an entirely preserved language.
