I'm partly motivated by curiosity about the extent to which people would consider this subject to absolutes of "yes" or "no".

I'm not sure about your supposition though - I suppose it depends on the specific crime. I don't suppose that people would be expecting a name change in the case of Jack the Ripper or Lizzie Borden. In a more recent case, where doubt was unclear or where testimony rested on a single witness who might be endangered by exposure, then I'd expect a name change.
