Since the direction of the wind and sun "varied widely where the images were taken", it's reasonable to suggest they're reacting to the planet's magnetic influence.

At least they considered it. But I'm not sure that it's a reasonable suggestion that the cattle are reacting to magnetic influence. Depending on the season, the direction of the sun *can* vary quite a bit, but it's always going to orient itself along a general east-west line. I could probably go even farther to suggest that the *average* sun track transcribes a pretty consistent range of east-to-west light. Is it consistent enough for cattle to use as a means of orientation...a slowly evolving trait that's based on the constant track of the sun across years and generations of livestock? Who knows? But I wouldn't be willing to exclude such criteria in favor of an even less-provable theory, however magnetically I might be drawn to it. ;)
