It has been noted that the 5GHz band is emptier - the 2.4GHz ISM band is very crowded indeed: 802.11b/g, Bluetooth, even microwave ovens. I worked on Bluetooth when it was an Ericsson proprietory product, and I remember the problems there were when trying to specify an access scheme that would cope with interference. And that was ten years ago :-)
