seeking PC hardware help by chaotic 2008-08-26 01:44:44
Dear Uficle,
I can get the "old" computer from a colleague for cheap.
He is a gamer, he says the computer can run anything except for some new games that need extra good hardware.
The computer is currently running Windwos Vista (iirc).
Now he got himself a notebook and that notebook is better than his computer. Vista's performance index for the notebook is above 4 instead of something between 3 and 4 for his desktop. So he wants to sell the computer.
I want a new computer and that would be a good opportunity to get one for cheap.

Here are the specs:
MsTech case with 80 cm fan on the side with a window
DVD DL burner from Sony
MSI Mainboard (gigabit lan/5.1/USB)
AMD athlon 64 4000+
2x512MB Geil(?) ram (passive cooling)
MSI PC54g III WLAN card
Genius 5.1 surround pci (sound) card
ATI X850XT 256MB AGP
2x blue cold light tubes (for illumination)
Hitachi Dekstar 120 GB hard drive 8MB cache
BE Quiet power supply 450 Watt or 530 Watt (he doesn't know it exactly)
These are the specs that he sent me, I just translated the important parts into english.

I'm not a gamer, the game with the most advanced graphics I play is NWN1. But I want to run Linux (Ubuntu) on the computer.
Do you think the computer is a good choice for me then?
Why or why not?
Do you think all components will run under Ubuntu linux?
The wlan is not important as I use lan cables for connecting the computers at home.

Or should I rather go and look for a computer that fits my purpose better?
