but when I went to double-check her name, it turns out Cindy actually did just barely make it to hurricane status just before landfall. At the time, they were still calling her a tropical storm, though.
I'd just arrived in town for a conference, had a hotel room with a floor-to-ceiling window overlooking Canal street. I could see the palm trees whipping around in the wind, the sheets of rain, an occasional hardy flag flapping madly.
Cindy welcomed us, and Dennis chased us all the way home again afterwards. Just glad it was that pair, and not a certain other hurricane later that year.... |
