Eyeshadow, mostly you have 2 options. Attract attention to your eyes, or match the outfit.
Attract attention to the eyes: Your eye colour is important here. You go with a colour as close to the natural colour as you can.
Match the outfit: coordinate colour with outfit as if coordinating a tshirt. Same basic rules apply. So, no mixing green and orange :P
Putting on, usually the eyeshadow packs come with a cotton bud type brush.You apply the powder to the brush, then stroke it over the eyelid whilst closed Just the eyelid.Avoid the rest of the socket unless panda is a good look on you :P. Open eyelid, then smooth with your finger until it looks even.
Lipstick, depends on skin tone. Best bet is to stroke a tester over the back of your hand, and look at what you think looks best. You dont want too dark, but neither do you want so pale you can barely see it. I work well in browns and pinks, but im very pale. You place on your lips, then kinda smush them together to spread it evenlyish. Tidy up with a lipbrush in the corners.
Nail varnish, safest bet is match the outfit unless doing all black. Black just says goth. In that case I usually go with a pale pink, but that might be too girlie for you. Maybe a gold or silver if you can... or a dark purple.
Applying smoothly is awkward on non-dominant hands. Might be best to get a girlfriend to help with this if you can. Run the brush around the neck of the bottle to rid the excess or it will apply too heavy and lumpy. I place a stroke in the centre from base of nail to the tip first, then one more each side. It tends to look more even that way.
