If you do this, please explain why: by Illiad 2008-08-22 18:01:22
You're having a friendly chat with someone on the phone. Your friend/colleague suddenly interrupts and says, "I'm really sorry, but I have to dash off right away. Can we pick this up again in thirty minutes?"

You say, "Sure! Oh, by the way..." and you launch off into more talk for another five minutes. You're likely unaware of the fact that you're doing almost all of the talking.

This irritates me. Whilst on a phone call if I say "I need to go" I really mean I NEED TO GO. Right now. Not after the next anecdote you want to tell me.

But! Rather than just be an anti-social grump, I'd like to understand why you do this, assuming you do. What goes through your head when $FRIEND says "I need to go" and you reply with "Oh before you go one final final thing...!" I'm rather hoping that a snapshot of your thought process or reasoning will help me see things from a different perspective.
