Which happens to be in the strategic interest of many countries due to international reliance on resources from the gulf region. The only reason there was opposition from some other important governments is that playing on the instability in the region was to their advantage. Some of them also liked the fact that the US had significant forces tied up there indefinitely. By finishing the job we should have the majority of our forces freed up by 2011-2015 instead of 2050 or later.

Oh, and if you think the region was stable before we went back in, you know absolutely nothing about the gulf states.
